Study Abroad
Studying abroad provides educational experiences in culture, language and academics that extend far beyond the traditional U.S. classroom setting. A survey conducted by The Institute for the International Education of Students (IES) found that students who study abroad saw an increase in their personal growth, exhibiting more self-confidence and maturity, as well as a better understanding of their values and how they view cultures different from their own. Many respondents also said their study abroad experience opened up new professional opportunities for them that have had a lasting impact on their careers.
In addition, learning how to communicate and find your way around a new country can require innovation, flexibility, critical-thinking skills and patience—skills that are as crucial as your classroom education.
Studying abroad is one of the best ways to prepare yourself to work in a global marketplace. Increasingly, employers are seeking people who can engage customers and co-workers around the world with confidence. Studying abroad fosters this level of global competence.

Summer 2012 Global Learning Media Contest
Sponsored by the Office of Global Affairs (OGA)
As you travel this summer to some of the world’s most interesting destinations to learn and increase your global competencies as a part of a Regent University’s learning abroad program, the Office of Global Affairs invites you to participate in Regent University’s first annual Global Learning Media Contest.
Since we know your international travel will be filled with awe inspiring moments, we would like you to share what you have learned from the study abroad experience: the essence of the people, the spiritual moments, the food, the culture, the historical landmarks and the unforgettable cross-cultural experiences.
We would like you to share all of the positive experiences of your learning abroad program, which helped increase your cultural awareness and had a lasting impact on you cross-cultural perceptions and assumptions by submitting a poem, a story, an essay, photos or video.
Guidelines
Who can participate?
Participation of the 2012 Global Learning Media Contest is open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni that have participated in a 2012 Office of Global Affairs’ (OGA) approved learning abroad program such as; a study abroad program, a study tour, a service learning abroad program, a mission trip or a study tour that is listed above.
How will submissions be judged?
Judges will consider how well the submission represents the topic of the contest which is the representation of participants’ global learning, along with creativity and submission quality.
What are the media submission options?
Note for all submissions: Keep in mind that all submissions, once submitted, become the property of the Office of Global Affairs. By submitting a photo, story, essay, song ,poem, or video you will be asked to agree to give Regent University non-exclusive rights to reproduce your work which will be displayed on the Regent University’s website, in printed publications, or in any other Regent University marketing and media projects in all media in perpetuity.
You will still retain the right to publish your work in other media and to further transfer rights to this work to other parties.
PHOTOS
Each contest participant may submit until up 5 (five) digital photos addressing the contest topic.
Each photo must include a25 to 50 word caption about the picture.
Photo captions can be provided in a word document with appropriate cataloging.
All photos entered in the contest should adhere to ethics of cultural sensitivity. If recognizable people are portrayed, the subjects must have given the photographer permission or "informed consent" to have the photograph taken.
You must also agree to only submit original photographs that were taken during your time on an Office of Global Affairs’ approved learning abroad program.
Photo guidelines:
Uploaded photos must be in JPEG format, for example, with a file name ending in ".jpg" or ".jpeg" or ".jpg" -- without the quotes. Submitted photos must be high-resolution, 300 ppi images with at least 2400 pixels in the longest dimension, but not to exceed 6,000,000 total pixels (for example, 3000 pixels by 2000 pixels). This means that photo file sizes should be between 4 MB and slightly fewer than 6 MB. Photos and corresponding captioning must be submitted as email attachments to OGA@regent.edu indicating “2012 Global Learning Media Contest Entry” in the email subject line.
WRITTEN WORDS: STORY, ESSAY, POEM OR SONG
Each contest participant may submit until up 3 (three) stories, essays, poems or songs addressing the contest topic.
Stories may be between 300 and 500 words.
Essays may be between 400 and 600 words
All work entered in the contest should adhere to ethics of cultural sensitivity. If recognizable people are mentioned or portrayed, the subjects must have given the writer permission or "informed consent" to have the mention them in the submission.
You must also agree to only submit original work produced as a result of your participation on an Office of Global Affairs’ approved learning abroad program.
Written words guidelines:
All work must include the authors name and contact information and be submitted as Microsoft Office Word document by email attachment to OGA@regent.edu indicating “2012 Global Learning Media Contest Entry” in the email subject line.
VIDEOS
Each contest participant may submit up to 3 (three) 5 minute video of edited or raw footage that can include some commentary addressing the contest topic. Multiple participant submissions will be accepted in the video category.
All videos entered in the contest should adhere to ethics of the cultural sensitivity. If recognizable people are shown in the video, the subjects must have given the videographer permission or "informed consent" to appear in the video.
You must also agree to only submit original footage that was taken during your time on an Office of Global Affairs’ approved learning abroad program.
Video Guidelines:
Videos must include author/authors’ name/s and contact information and be submitted by mail as a DVD readable by ordinary DVD players to:

What are the contest Prizes?
$75 first place
$40 second place
$20 third place
$10 fourth place
$5 fifth place
First to third place will be Amazon gift cards and fourth and fifth places will receive Chick-fil-A gift cards.
Winning submissions will be also included in campus exhibitions and posted on the Office of Global Affairs’ website.
OGA also reserves the right to include all 'first-tier' photos in the Honorable Mention category which is not limited to a certain number. This policy ensures that all 'first-tier' submissions are recognized.
Deadline
All submissions should be postmarked by August 20, 2012 or delivered by 5pm the same day to the Office of Global Affairs Library 209.
