To say that I have experienced God's favor over my academic and professional career is an understatement. I received my doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Regent University in 2007. During my academic career at Regent, I participated in a number of advanced level practica placement sites that groomed me to become a well rounded clinician including Hampton Roads Neuropsychology and Indian Creek Correctional Center. I also had opportunities to work in organizations that allowed me to define my area of interest early in my academic career including Sentara Healthcare. My research interests involved positive psychology and health. In an effort to bridge these two interests, I conducted research projects that focused on the relationship between gratitude and overall health, which has been recognized professionally by the Christian Association of Psychological Studies and the American Psychological Association.
I was blessed to become the first Regent student to receive a psychology internship at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia. God's blessings didn't stop there, as I went on to become the second Regent graduate to receive a Post Doctoral Fellowship in Primary Care Psychology at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Following my Post Doctoral Fellowship, I went on to spend over three years as a faculty member with Eastern Virginia Medical School, where I held a joint appointment as Assistant Professor and Primary Care Psychologist in the Departments of Family and Community Medicine and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. The position provided me with the opportunity to provide collaborative care to patients in a variety of settings including outpatient family practice clinics and in several local hospitals. I had the pleasure of teaching medical students, family medicine residents and physicians as well as psychology interns the art of patient centered care with an emphasis on the biopsychosocial aspects of physical health related illnesses. This allowed me to be part of the paradigm shift in our nation's current healthcare system, as it undergoes an overhaul and more emphasis is placed on integrated services and holistic health care. I currently serve as part-time faculty with EVMS in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences as the Integrated Care Supervisor for the Psychology Internship Training Program.
One of my personal pursuits is expanding the role of the primary care psychologist as well as extending the reach of clinical psychology via the use of technology. To that end, I have co-founded Dr. S.O.S., LLC. Our company focus is on fostering open discussion and promoting the importance of mental, physical and spiritual well-being and relationships. We are spreading our message through a combination of services, events and activities involving tele-therapy, articles, radio and even television. CallDoctorSOS.com serves as the nexus of our activities.
While attending Regent University, my husband and I started our family with two handsome boys. Since beginning my professional career, God increased our blessings by allowing us to borrow one of his sweetest angels in the form of our baby girl. My life is a testament that you can have a wonderful family life and pursue your career as long as you allow Him to order your steps.
I credit Regent University with providing me the academic and professional foundation I needed to earn the respect of my colleagues and to pursue the vision God has placed on my life. The Regent community blessed me richly as a graduate student and now I gratefully stand in His overflow as a faculty member.
