Dr. Fred Rovai

Fred Rovai presently serves as associate vice president for Academic Affairs. Previously, he taught statistics, program evaluation and strategic planning in Regent's School of Education. His early career as a U.S. Army military intelligence officer shifted into higher education after retiring from the military as dean at the Joint Forces Staff College and earning a Ph.D. degree in academic leadership from Old Dominion University. Since then, Dr. Rovai has held academic appointments at UCLA and Old Dominion University before joining Regent University in 2000. In 2009, Old Dominion University recognized him as a Darden College of Education Alumni Fellow.

He has presented at national and international conferences on the topics of educational technology and distance education, has authored or coauthored over 70 scholarly and popular articles, book chapters, and conference papers, and has served on several editorial boards, including Educational Technology Research and Development (for which he presently serves as Consulting Research Editor), The Internet and Higher Education, Journal of Computing in Higher Education, and International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning (for which he also served as North American Regional Editor for a year). Additionally, he co-edited a 2007 book on closing the African American achievement gap in higher education, co-authored a 2008 book on distance learning in higher education (which received the Association of Educational Communications and Technology's 2009 Outstanding Book award), and wrote a 2009 book titled The Internet and Higher Education: Achieving Global Reach.
